On Thursday evening at the Josy Barthel stadium on the Route d'Arlon in Luxembourg city, the Grand Duchy's football team earned an important win over Belarus in their FIFA World Cup Group A match at home to Belarus.
The win, however, does not change Luxembourg's standing at the bottom of the table, now on 4 points, one behind Belarus. France leads the group on 16 points, with Sweden on 13 points.
Managed by Luc HOLTZ and #136 in the FIFA rankings, the Red Devils scored in the 60th minute courtesy of the only goal of the game scored by Daniel DA MOTA. This meant that Luxembourg had maintained their good record against the visitors, having also beaten them 1-0 (away) in October 2007 within the UEFA European championships qualifiers - Belarus had won the first leg in Luxembourg 2-1.
Within this same campaign, Luxembourg drew 1-1 away to Belarus, with Benoit Joachim's goal levelling the scores just 5 minutes before the final whistle after the home side had gone ahead after 80 minutes. In the Euro 2016 qualifiers, both teams were drawn together in Group C, with Belarus winning 2-0 in Minsk, with Luxembourg's home match in September 2014 ending 1-1.
On 8 October 2010, Luxembourg drew 0-0 at home against Belarus in a UEFA European Championship qualifier, with Belarus winning the return leg 2-0 the following June.
In the past 10 games between the two countries, Luxembourg has won two, Belarus has won four, and four have been draws.
