In Wednesday morning's draw for inaugural edition of new UEFA competition, the Nations League, Luxembourg were drawn against Belarus, Moldova and San Marino in League D, Group 2.
In League D, the top four ranked teams that do not qualify for UEFA EURO 2020 will enter a play-off in March 2020, with one finals place on offer.
2 December 2018: European Qualifiers group stage draw (the 55 teams are split into ten groups of five or six)
21–26 March, 7–8 & 10–11 June, 5–10 September, 10–15 October & 14–19 November 2019: European Qualifiers group stage (ten matchdays)
22 November 2019: European Qualifiers play-off draw
Early December 2019: UEFA EURO 2020 final tournament draw
26–31 March 2020: European Qualifiers play-offs
1 April 2020: Additional final tournament draw if required
12 June–12 July 2020 (provisional): UEFA EURO 2020 final tournament
All 24 finalists for UEFA EURO 2020 will come from European Qualifiers; 20 will earn their places via conventional groups and the four remaining teams come through a changed play-off system. The top two from each group will qualify for the final tournament, determining the first 20 places. The last four EURO places will be won through the European Qualifiers play-offs, which will be contested by the 16 UEFA Nations League group winners (i.e. the four group winners in each of the four divisions).
The draw means that Luxembourg will be up against Belarus once more, a team against whom they have a very good recent record. At the end of August, in a FIFA World Cup Group A match (at home), Luxembourg won 1-0. Earlier in the same campaign, Luxembourg drew 1-1 away to Belarus. In the Euro 2016 qualifiers, both teams were drawn together in Group C, with Belarus winning 2-0 in Minsk, with Luxembourg's home match in September 2014 ending 1-1. On 8 October 2010, Luxembourg drew 0-0 at home against Belarus in a UEFA European Championship qualifier, with Belarus winning the return leg 2-0 the following June. Back in 2007, Luxembourg beat Belarus 1-0 (away) in October 2007 within the UEFA European championships qualifiers - Belarus had won the first leg in Luxembourg 2-1.
