Awareness leaflets are set to be distributed in Luxembourg City this 28 January 2019 on the occasion of Data Protection Day.

Each year, on 28 January, Data Protection Day is recognised in Europe. The Council of Europe and European Commission organised this occasion with the aim of making citizens aware of the importance of protecting their personal data and respecting their fundamental rights and freedoms, especially their privacy.

The date itself reflects the Council of Europe's signature of "Convention 108" (28 January 1981), the first legally binding international instrument in this area. For 38 years, the convention aims to protect anyone against the misuse of data concerning them and to ensure transparency regarding the files and processing of personal data.

As part of Data Protection Day, the National Commission for Data Protection (CNPD) will distribute its public awareness leaflet to strategic locations in Luxembourg. The purpose of this publication entitled "Your data? Your rights! "Is to present citizens' rights in data protection and explain how to enforce them.

On 28 January 2019, the brochure will be distributed at the following locations: Luxembourg-Gare from 07:00-10:00, high schools in Limpertsberg from 10:00-12:00 and Glacis from 12:00-14:00.

The brochure is available in French and German. It is available in printed form and can be downloaded from the website of the CNPD (www.cnpd.lu).

The CNPD will also participate in two events on this day with a presentation on "The role of the CNPD in the era of the new General Data Protection Regulation" to be given to the staff of the Court of Justice of the European Union and an intervention at the "Data Privacy Day", organised by the University of Luxembourg and Restena, on the theme of the impact of data breaches on citizens' rights.
