In terms of inflows, the direct insurance figures for the fourth quarter of 2017 confirmed the good performance of the previous quarters.

The inflow of non-life business lines continued to rise by 6.62% compared to the fourth quarter of 2016 and premiums in life insurance increased by 11.59% compared to the same period last year. Taking into account the performances of the first three quarters, the whole of the year recorded a premium increase of 13.66%: the non-life branches grew by 4.43%, while those of life insurance grew by 15.22%.

The figures for the last quarter of 2017 also show a significant increase in the results of the direct insurance sector: with €492.17 million, profits are up 45.19% compared to €338.99 million in 2016.

Moreover, life insurers' total technical provisions amounted to €173.20 billion at the end of 2017, an increase of 8.08% compared to the end of 2016 and 2.75% compared to the end of September 2017. With an income of €293.67 million, after tax income is 37.86% higher than in 2016.

Meanwhile, non-life insurance - excluding marine insurance in the fourth quarter - rose 4.43%. The inflow of insurers working mainly, although not exclusively on the Luxembourg market, is growing faster than inflation with premium growth of 3.81%. With an increase of 7.47% in their inflow, the performance of companies operating abroad in non-life insurance lines excluding marine insurance contrasts with the sluggishness of this market in 2016 and returns to the dynamism of previous years.

Finally, the employment of direct insurance companies grew dramatically to 6,114 at the end of 2016, a 914-unit gain from 2016. Much of this growth came from the attachment to two Luxembourg operators of large networks of branches abroad. With a level of €145.60 million, direct taxes are almost unchanged compared to 2016.
