An orange alert has been triggered for the coming days in Luxembourg due to the current heatwave.

Following the MeteoLux forecasts announcing maximum temperatures that will still exceed 30°C over most of Luxembourg in days to come, the Directorate of Health has triggered the orange weather warning phase of the present heatwave.

This phase includes a first evaluation visit to be carried out, as part of the national heatwave plan, by the help and home care networks to Luxembourg Red Cross patients who are neither receiving benefits from care insurance nor are they known by the networks, in accordance with the provisions of the convention heat wave 2018 concluded with COPAS (Federation of Providers to the Aid and Care Sector). The Red Cross and COPAS - along with help and home care networks - will thus deploy the necessary number of professionals to coach people who need help with the heatwave plan. Indeed, professionals (nurses, caregivers, social and family helpers) will be made aware and trained to contribute to the smooth running of the plan.

The heatwave plan proposes to people aged 75 or over, who are living alone (or with a person with a disability), possess limited autonomy and receive no assistance from care insurance, to register or be registered to benefit from monitoring visits and hydration assistance in case of high temperatures.

The following recommendations to follow during a heatwave have also been issued:

- if you know of an elderly or sick person living alone, it is important to visit them daily to check that they have and consume enough mineral or sparkling water (at least 1.5 litres/day);

- ensure that they spends several hours a day in cool places or in the shade;

- close the windows and window shutters exposed to the sun during the day;

- ensure the elderly/ill individual regularly takes refreshing showers or baths.

The concerned individuals can also contact the Luxembourg Red Cross via tel.: (+352) 27 55 (Monday to Friday from 08:00-17:00) or the Inspectorate of the Directorate of Health via tel.: 247-85650 for any additional information.
