The Projekt Sudspidol was unveiled on Tuesday by Luxembourg's Minister of Health, Lydia Mutsch; it will group together CHEM hospitals in Esch-sur-Alzette (Centre Hospitalier Emile Mayrisch), Dudelange (Hôpital de la Ville de Dudelange) and Niederkorn (Hôpital Princesse Marie-Astrid) and the Centre François-Baclesse (the National Radiotherapy Centre) in Esch-sur-Alzette.

The move has been triggered by problems with the infrastructure of the various buildings which will face a phased closure. The new hospital complex will be built at Elsebrich close to Esch-Belval - just off the Raemerich roundabout - at a cost of €542 million of which the state will contribute 80% funding; plans are for it to open its doors in 2020. Around €10 million will be put aside for specialised medical equipment. Operational costs, however, are expected to drop by 15% as a result of the single hospital complex compared to the present situation where the services are located at different sites.

The Green Hospital concept will be both patient-friendly and employee-friendly, focusing on care of patients, including surgery, oncology and internal medicine, geriatrics, psychiatry and rehabilitation, and will also include an innovative day clinic area. 81% of rooms will be single-occupancy only.

The building format will be a multi-part construction project with three triangular buildings, all closely connected.

The Sudspidol Hospital Project was born following a study conducted in 2010 analysing seven different scenarios (including the renovation of existing sites), according to their investment costs, functional gains, operating costs and their long-term medical benefits, and which highlighted the substantial advantage of a new construction.

"Südspidol is located in the immediate vicinity of the Belval district of Esch and is strategically and centrally located in the southern region," said Luxembourg's Minister of Health, Lydia Mutsch.

As the cost of the new hospital project exceeds €40 million, it needs to receive parliamentary approval in the form of a new law.
