Luxembourg railways, the CFL, is introducing new Volvo hybrid buses as part of its electromobility strategy.

In a call for tenders initiated in 2018, the CFL decided to award Volvo Bus Luxembourg the order for four Volvo 7900 LAH hybrid articulated buses. The Swedish manufacturer yesterday delivered the hybrid buses.

These 18m buses can accommodate up to 132 passengers. They are equipped with a battery that allows gains in terms of fuel consumption of some 39%. In terms of availability, this bus is considered the best of the hybrid category by the main European operators.

The CFL management explained: "The CFL was seduced by the ecological aspect of the hybrid buses that pollute less than a diesel bus and by the prospect of reducing fuel consumption. CFL has always been at the forefront in the acquisition of new technologies and it was essential to start a shift towards electromobility [...]. This hybrid technology is a first step that marks the beginning of a transitional phase between diesel buses and 100% electric buses."

With the help of its Zone Management service, the 7900LAH buses, which are equipped with an 8.9kWh battery, will soon be able to be programmed so as to respect zero emission zones. This significant advance will allow the buses to cross cities without emitting (noise) pollution.
