The Administration des Ponts et Chaussées has announced that construction work is about to start on an underground passage at Walferdange railway station, with work expected to conclude in the summer of 2020.

As part of the project to remove the PN17 crossing at CR125 in Walferdange, the Administration des Ponts et Chaussées and the CFL are carrying out a construction project, the aim of which will be to improve safety for road, pedestrian and vehicular traffic, as well as cyclists on the CR125 as well as on the Luxembourg-Troisvierges railway line.

The road project consists mainly of the construction of an underground passage (for motorised traffic and soft mobility) on the CR125 at the "Stafelter" tunnel at the height of the PN17 in Helmsange. The PN17 will remain accessible for soft mobility until compliance with the Walferdange railway stop (new pedestrian underground with lifts).

Traffic impact

The work will begin on Thursday 15 February 2018 and will last two and a half years. They will be realised in severn separate phases. Traffic impacts will only occur during the first 2 phases, i.e. between mid-February and July 2018.

During phase 1 (until mid-March 2018), part of the Rue de la Gare (from the Roses roundabout to the rue de Dommeldange intersection) will be closed to traffic. The Rue d'Eglise will end in a cul-de-sac. The diversion will be via Rue Charles Rausch and the back of Rue de la Gare.

During Phase 2 (from mid-March to July 2018), part of Rue de la Gare (from the church to the level crossing) will be closed to traffic. The diversion will be via Rue Charles Rausch and the back of Rue de la Gare. The area between the church and the Roses roundabout, as well as the entire rue d'Eglise, will be accessible again to traffic. The rue de Dommeldange will end in cul-de-sac.

For the duration of the work, the rue des Champs and the Rue du Chemin de Fer will end in a cul-de-sac.

The work that will follow after July 2018 will only involve one-off measures with no major impact on traffic.
