As part of its market surveillance activities, the Luxembourg Institute for Standardisation, Accreditation, Safety and Quality of Products and Services (ILNAS), a public entity under the supervision of the Ministry of the Economy, has coordinated a number of recall actions by car manufacturers since 15 December 2017 in Luxembourg.

ILNAS's Citizen Service makes it possible to effectively inform vehicle owners so that they can proceed with the necessary repairs to the vehicles involved in a recall. Car manufacturers and distributors see this service as a valuable asset for making effective contact with owners while complying with the legal requirements for data protection and privacy.

Since ILNAS provided this service (on 15 December 2017), almost 13,000 owners have received a letter from the administration informing them in a targeted manner that their vehicle is likely to compromise their safety or harm public health or safety, including the environment. The owners of these vehicles have been invited to contact to their distributor to remedy the problem.

Based on the chassis numbers of the vehicles to be recalled, has ILNAS identified vehicles registered in Luxembourg and has informed each owner by post. The costs related to the necessary technical modifications to the vehicles concerned are borne by the manufacturers. The ILNAS procedure makes it possible to inform each owner of a vehicle registered in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg as soon as an alert is issued by the European Commission through the RAPEX European Early Warning System. This service is provided through the technical support of the State Information Technology Centre (CTIE), which has the vehicle registration database.

In addition to the information sent by mail, ILNAS is constantly investigating vehicles and car accessories sold on the Luxembourg market. The search for dangerous products allows ILNAS to act towards better protection of consumers and the environment.
