Danger Motorcyclists campaign;

On Friday 27 April 2018, Luxembourg's Ministry of Sustainable Development and Infrastructure, the Ministry of Internal Security and the Grand Ducal Police issued details of a joint action to increase the safety of motorcyclists on the roads of the Grand Duchy.

Since the beginning of the year, several serious motorcycle accidents have occurred, just when the motorcycle season has begun. Several motorcyclists have lost their lives on the roads of the Grand Duchy already in 2018.

In view of this dramatic development, François Bausch, Minister of Sustainable Development and Infrastructure, and Etienne Schneider, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Internal Security, decided to take joint action to combat road safety. As a result, a number of additional measures will be put in place in the short term, in terms of prevention, law enforcement and infrastructure.

Thus, the "Motorcycles" working group which brings together representatives of the Ministry of Sustainable Development and Infrastructure, the Police Lëtzebuerg, Road Safety ASBL, the Administration des Ponts et Chaussées, the Administration of Technical Investigations of the Automobile Club Luxembourg, the Driver Training Centre, the Luxembourg Federation of Master Instructors, the Moto-Union Luxembourg and the BMW-Moto Club Lëtzebuerg, has explored different avenues to improve safety for motorcyclists.

Several measures have been decided together to increase safety on Luxembourg's roads, as follows:

• Establishment of new, more relevant signs announcing a particularly dangerous road/way for motorcyclists;
• Lëtzebuerg Police Spring Campaign targeting mainly motorcyclists to control, among other things, the papers and technical condition of motorcycles;
• Organisation of controls in the Greater Region together with the police forces of neighbouring countries;
• Launch of a campaign marked by an increased presence of the Police Lëtzebuerg on sections of roads with high numbers of motorcyclists to control, in particular, speeding. In order to announce this enhanced presence and speed controls, second signs will be installed at strategic points of the road network;
• Continued police awareness and prevention efforts on social networks, namely Facebook and Twitter;
• The offer of the Fit for your Bike training, organised annually at the Colmar-Berg Driver Training Centre will be reinforced in 2019 with the organisation of a 4th day, thus enabling 400 motorcyclists to take part in this very popular training course;
• Development of a pilot project by the State Roads Authority on the section of the N25 from Wiltz-Kautenbach, which provides for the setting up of specific markings to encourage motorcyclists to keep a safe distance from the centreline from the road, to allow safer driving in corners;
• Continued work to secure the slippery surfaces for motorcyclists.
