Yesterday evening marked the opening of the exhibition “Amis/Ennemis. Mansfeld et le revers de la médaille at the Musée Dräi Eechelen.

The exhibition, assembled with the help of loansfrom the Royal Library of Belgium, forms part of the 50th anniversary of the Renaissance prince Pierre-Ernest de Mansfeld (1517-1604).

The governor of Luxembourg resided in the Grand Duchy itself, in his palace in Clausen, as well as in the Spanish court in Brussels, where he socialised with dignitaries, noblemen and humanists. Thus, a social fabric emerged as reflected by the precious miniature portraits on display, created by medal engraver Jacques Jonghelinck.

As well as medals, the exhibition features a series of paintings, documents and portraits associated with and depicting the life of Mansfeld.

Regular guided tours and a catalogue of the exhibition by François Reinert will also be available. the catalogue includes images of 90 medals illustrating the collections of the Royal Library of Belgium and the Luxembourg National Museum of Art and History.

The exhibition will run at the Musée Dräi Eechelen from 30 May-21 October 2018.
