Special Olympics Luxembourg will participate later this month at the World Summer Special Olympics in Los Angeles on the west coast of the USA.

The Luxembourg delegation includes a total of 57 people, including 38 athletes and 19 coaches, with the athletel participating in 8 disciplines: athletics, swimming, tennis, table tennis, gymnastics, boccia, football and basketball. The football and basketball teams each comprise 5 athletes with intellectual disabilities and 5 partners.

A total of 7,000 athletes will participate from 170+ countries, in the 25 events over the 9 days in 27 venues.

The delegation of Special Olympics Luxembourg will depart the Grand Duchy on 20 July and are scheduled to return on the evening of 4 August.

Competitions start on 25 July and the opening ceremony, including the attendance of Michelle Obama, will be broadcast live online via www.espnplayer.com/espnplayer/console. Performers will include Stevie Wonder, Avril Lavigne, Nicole Scherzinger, O.A.R., Cody Simpson (featuring Special Olympics athlete Breanna Bogucki and YouTube sensation Madison Tevlin), J Balvin & Becky G, and Reach Up LA theme song creator Siedah Garrett. With appearances by Jimmy Kimmel, Eva Longoria, Michael Phelps, Yao Ming, Greg Louganis, Stephanie McMahon and Lauren Potter among others, the show is set to be one of the most inspirational events Los Angeles has ever hosted.
