In response to the serious humanitarian crisis currently affecting Yemen, Luxembourg this week confirmed that it is committing €1.8 million for humanitarian relief efforts in the country this year.

This assistance will mainly be implemented in collaboration with Luxembourg humanitarian partners such as the World Food Program (WFP) and the International Committee for the Red Cross and Red Crescent (ICRC) under the bilateral and multi-annual partnership agreements which Luxembourg maintains with these humanitarian agencies.

For Romain Schneider, Minister of Cooperation and Humanitarian Action, the increased mobilisation of the international community is necessary to give hope and prospects to thousands of Yemenis, especially children who suffer disproportionately. Luxembourg considers unimpeded access to humanitarian aid in this conflict ravaged country to be an essential principle.

Yemen is one of four countries (Somalia, South Sudan, Nigeria and Yemen) for which the UN last month issued a famine threat alert that could affect 20 million people. In response to this international mobilisation, the Minister of Cooperation and Humanitarian Action launched an additional emergency aid of €500,000 for projects by long-standing Luxembourg humanitarian NGOs in the regions concerned. This aid was added to the €4 million assistance Luxembourg had already allocated to the countries in the region.
