At the first extraordinary meeting of the European Council since the triggering of Article 50 by the United Kingdom, Luxembourg’s prime minister, Xavier Bettel, said he was very happy with the unity shown by the attending 27 member states.
The Heads of State or Government showed unanimity in defining the negotiating framework and established the general positions and principles that will be those of the European Union during the forthcoming negotiations.
"The Council has shown its unity by quickly adopting the guidelines for the Brexit negotiations. I am delighted with this unity.” said the prime minister after the meeting.
"One of Luxembourg's priorities in the negotiations is the preservation of the rights of citizens, whether European citizens in Britain or British citizens within the European Union,” he added.
Xavier Bettel also underlined that maintaining a level playing field in the common market in general and more particularly with regard to financial services remains an imperative for Luxembourg.
