Luxembourg's Secretary of State for Sustainable Development and Infrastructure, Camille Gira, is to meet the EU Commissioner for Regional Policy Corina Creţu, on Thursday 12 April 2018 to discuss the role of evidence-based policy making and ESPON - a European Grouping on Territorial Cooperation - for the future of the EU Cohesion Policy in Luxembourg.

Following the meeting, the Commissioner and the State Secretary, will deliver a briefing which is expected to cover:

• The role of evidence-based policy making and ESPON for the future of Europe;
• Insights from Commissioner Creţu into the future EU Cohesion Policy;
• The Luxembourgish position on the EU Cohesion Policy post 2020;
• Comments on striking scientific messages received from ESPON in the context of territorial, socioeconomic or energy transition disparities in European regions;
• Main argument to advocate the future of the Cohesion Policy; main reason for the vast support of European regions and cities for the Cohesion Alliance (reference to a recent Tweet of the Commissioner claiming that the Cohesion Alliance has become a ‘mountain of support’);
• Value added of the EU Cohesion Policy and territorial cooperation / integration for the future of Europe.

ESPON is the European Territorial Observatory Network that provides scientific analyses and advice for territorial and sectoral policies in a number of contexts including economy and finance, unemployment, foreign direct investment, circular and low-carbon economy, healthcare, migration, etc.

The Cohesion Policy is the EU's main investment policy for regional development. With EUR 351.8 billion, almost a third of the total EU budget has been set aside for Cohesion Policy between 2014 and 2020.
