Luxembourg Minister of Foreign and European Affairs Jean Asselborn participated yesterday and today in the Meeting of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe in Denmark.

Foreign Affairs Minister Jean Asselborn took part in the 128th meeting of the Council of Europe's Committee of Ministers which took place on 17 and 18 May 2018 in Helsingør, Denmark.

The prospects for the future and the Council of Europe's response to current and potential challenges were central to the ministers' discussions, as the organisation is currently experiencing a crisis of confidence that is not the result of external factors but of apparent loss of confidence in multilateral institutions by some Member States. Ministers shared their views on what should be done to resolve this crisis, both at the national and international levels, by sharing their vision on long-term political goals for the organisation, including priority areas for the future.

Stressing the importance of reinvigorating the common commitment to "effective multilateralism", the head of Luxembourgish diplomacy insisted that "human rights - enshrined in the European Convention on Human Rights - are not negotiable", assuring that "Luxembourg will continue to defend itself against racist, authoritarian and populist worldviews."

Outside of the meeting, the Minister took advantage of the presence of many colleagues and senior politicians to increase the exchange of views on current issues. Jean Asselborn thus met with the Secretary General of the Council of Europe, Thorbjorn Jagland, a bilateral meeting during which the Minister renewed the full confidence of Luxembourg in its work, as well as its support in its proposals to find the solutions that are needed.
