Romain Schneider discusses importance of Benelux at 60th Anniversary in Brussels

On 5 June 2018, Luxembourg Minister of Cooperation and Humanitarian Action Romain Schneider took part in the 60^th anniversary of the signing of the Treaty establishing the Benelux Economic Union.

Romain Schneider represented the Luxembourg Government at the festivities organised on the occasion of the 60th anniversary of the signing of the Treaty establishing the Benelux Economic Union this past Tuesday. At the invitation of His Royal Highness the King of the Belgians, Minister Schneider attended a luncheon at the Royal Palace in Brussels in the presence of Their Royal Highnesses the Grand Duke and the King of the Netherlands, as well as the Belgian and Dutch Foreign Ministers, Didier Reynders and Stef Blok.

The lunch was followed by a courtesy visit to the Benelux secretariat-general and a session at the Palace of Fine Arts. In the presence of HRH the Grand Duke and alongside European leaders, Minister Romain Schneider delivered a speech in which he stressed that "Benelux derives from the close historic ties that bind Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxembourg and which have led us to make identical choices, far beyond economic cooperation."

The minister also recalled that "the Benelux remains an open house, a place of meeting and collaboration that allows us to address together the many challenges and opportunities for the future, in the interest of the three countries, its citizens and the European construction."
