On Tuesday, Luxembourg's Minister of Foreign and European Affairs, Jean Asselborn, met with the Vice-President of the Knesset and a member of the "Joint List" (political alliance of the majority Arab parties in Israel), Ahmad Tibi, in Luxembourg.

The Vice-President of the Knesset was accompanied by a delegation composed of Jamal Zahalka, Masud Ganaim, Yousef Jabareen and Talab Abu Arar, all members of the Knesset elected under the banner of the "Joint List".

The discussions provided an in-depth look at recent worrying developments in the Middle East, particularly the situation in the Gaza Strip and the financial situation of the UN relief and works agency for Palestine refugees in the Middle East, UNRWA, following the US administration's decision to stop funding the agency.

The working meeting also provided an opportunity for an exchange of views between the Luxembourg Foreign Minister and the Knesset parliamentary delegation on the implications of the latter's adoption, on 19 July, of the Basic Law and the situation of minorities in Israel.

Minister Asselborn reiterated Luxembourg's commitment to a two-state solution, based on the 1967 borders, the only viable solution for achieving lasting peace between Israelis and Palestinians. He reiterated support for the efforts of the European Union to internationalise the peace process.
