St George's Year 12 Drama Students 2018;

On Thursday evening, St George’s International School in Luxembourg-Hamm put on their second annual Media Screening & Drama Performance event in the school's auditorium.

Year 12 students put on a dramatic production about teenage pregnancy, a comedy drama that they wrote, directed and acted themselves. The plot concerned a 17 year-old girl who got pregnant at a house party and the psychological and other effects that brings. The storyline addressed issues such as peer pressure and “being cool”, sex education - using analogies to explain biological issues - and dealing with the consequences, from both the teenager’s and their parents’ perspectives.

The set was minimal, with just a few props; technicians managed the lights and sound effects both during and between scenes. Five students were on stage, with each playing different characters which required a change in acting for each of them.

Part comedy and part serious drama, it is clear that the students had fun in creating the production which had the audience laughing and applauding in equal measure.

The drama production was followed by the media students who had put together a number of videos which they had produced themselves, with years 11, 12 and 13 all involved.

Mainly music videos, they showed detailed research and planning, including story-boarding and location-scouting (pre-production), shooting including lighting and camera effects including focussing and panning, including green-screens (production), and continuity, animation, artwork and cross-marketing, inserting clips and footage from old videos and modern films, etc. (post-production).

With Morrissey, Ed Sheeran, Suede and a medley of songs (from 2017 media studies videos), the students worked with a vast array of music genres to showcase their creative talents.

Also screened were “slasher intros” to films, presenting a wide array of techniques for opening scenes of various films, again all of which they researched, shot and produced to great effect, demonstrating an in/depth knowledge and understanding of the media.

All in all, a massive step-up from the 2017 productions!
