Today, Thursday 30 August, saw the return of all of the International School of Luxembourg’s students; however, it was not a normal first day back as teachers and staff had arranged for the writer and performer of the ‘Moien Dance’, Ouedraogo Hazael Pawentaore, to attend and give a special surprise dance performance to celebrate Luxembourg and welcome the new and returning students.

The Lower School students who are aged 3 to 11, were lining up ready for their first class when they got the surprise. As the music turned up they quickly joined in with the jumping, clapping and excitement. Lower School Principal, Patricia Angoy, also had absolutely no idea and can be seen joyfully joining in with the fun.

Founded in 1963, the school has now been open for 55 years and has 1,367 students from 54 different nationalities. Teachers and staff arranged the event as part of the school’s Lëtz KoolTour Integration which is an addition to the curriculum that focuses on learning about, and celebrating, Luxembourgish culture.

ISL’s Head of Community Relations, Nancy Squicciarini, said: “This was a wonderful way to celebrate Luxembourg and welcome our new and returning students back. It can be difficult moving to another country and school. Ouedraogo Hazael Pawentaore and his dance team gave us the most incredible start to the new school year, and showed our new parents and students what a great sense of community Luxembourg has.”

ISL's Upper School students returned on Wednesday 29 August.

ISL has student and parent volunteers who help new families to settle into the school and the community when they arrive in Luxembourg.
