On Wednesday 5 July 2017, Marc Hansen, Luxembourg's Minister of Housing, and Claude Haagen, Mayor of the City of Diekirch, presented the concept of redevelopment of the old cité militaire in Diekirch town centre.

The land, which covers 205.11 ares, will be revitalised in the neighbourhood with short roads, residential groupings, administrative / public buildings, as well as commercial and service functions.

Emphasis will be placed on housing with the construction of 150 new dwellings for affordable housing, both for sale and for rent. The buildings will be 2-4 storeys tall and will have a total of 350 parking spaces.

Historically, the land was outside the town walls until the beginning of the 19th century. The Grand-Hôtel des Ardennes was built and operated there. During the Second World War, the hotel accommodated the tax administration and was badly damaged during the war. In 1953 the town of Diekirch bought the remains of the building as well as the land on which it was located, and resold it to the State which built houses for brigadiers and officers of the Luxembourg army, based in Diekirch.
