In the 2018 edition of the “Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings”, the University of Luxembourg has achieved the rank of 179, which it shares with the University of Twente; since its entry into the THE rankings in 2016, the University has consistently ranked among the best 200 universities.
The results of THE World University Rankings, one of the most important university rankings worldwide, were announced in London on 5 September 2017. “Achieving a position among the top 200 universities worldwide for the third time in a row confirms the sustained performance of the University of Luxembourg which is well on its way to establishing itself as one of the leading higher education institutions in Europe,” enthused Prof. Ludwig Neyses, Vice-President for Research, Acting Rector of the University.
In comparison with the 2017 results, the overall number of universities participating in this year’s rankings increased from 980 to 1102. Improving in the categories of Research and Citations and dropping slightly in Industry Income and Teaching, the University of Luxembourg consolidated its excellent results from the previous two years when it was ranked 178 and 193, respectively. For the first time, the University achieved the sole first place worldwide in the category International Outlook which it shared with Qatar University in 2017. This category takes into account the ratio of international students and staff to domestic sudents and personnel, as well as the involvement of international co-authors in publications.
Rank 77 worldwide in category Citations
In the category Citations, the University of Luxembourg ranked 77 worldwide. This indicator highlights how often researchers’ publications are quoted by scholars globally, using data drawn from over 23,000 academic journals. “We are very pleased with the results,” Prof. Ludwig Neyses added. “Especially our repeatedly outstanding performance in Citations is a strong reflection of the level of excellence in research that we have achieved.” Earlier this year, THE published a ranking for universities younger than 50 years, where the University of Luxemburg was ranked eleventh.
The THE World University Rankings evaluate the strengths of a university in the areas of Teaching, Research, International outlook, Industry income and Citations based on 13 performance indicators.
