Sports Awards 2018 (L-R): Christine Majerus, Bob Jungels;

The traditional Luxembourg Sports Press Gala, organised by Sportspress, was recently held at the Casino2000 in Mondorf-les-Bains, with cyclists Christine Majerus and Bob Jungels picking up the top awards of the evening.

Seven years after Andy Schleck, Bob Jungels was finally awarded this title after which he had been in the running for a few years The Luxembourg cyclist this year won, for the first time in his career, one of the most prestigious races in the world and also delivered a very strong performance in the Tour de France. The Luxembourger's training objectives will be somewhat different in 2019 with probably the main aim being the Giro d'Italia.

Christine Majerus has been at the top of Luxembourg sport for the fifth time in her career, having previously won the title in 2013, 2015, 2016 and 2017. She was rewarded for a very consistent season with a superb fourth place at the Cyclo-Cross World Championships in Valkenburg.

Football was the other big winner of the evening. The trophy for the best team, coach of the year and best male hope all went to football. It was no surprise that the Team of the Year award went to F91 Dudelange for their exploits in the UEFA Europa leaguge, becoming the first Luxembourg team to qualify for the group stages. F91 Dudelange coach during this adventure was rewarded with the title of Best Coach of the year. Young Hopeful was Leandro Barreiro who just signed a contract at FC Mainz 05.

Special mention went to young Eleonora Molinaro who succeeded in a fantastic season 2018 and was awarded the title of Hope of the Year. After climbing several hundred places in the world rankings, the young tennis player does not intend to stop and her ambition is to break into the top 200 for 2019.

The ceremony, which took place in front of more than 800 people, ended with the award of a special prize to Romain Schneider in recognition of his 9.5 years as the head of the Ministry of Sport. This award was given to him by the president of Pportspress, Petz Lahure, in the presence of the new Minister of Sport, Dan Kersch
