On Tuesday 24 April 2018, as part of the "Rethink your clothes" campaign, the Place d'Armes in Luxembourg-ville will be the venue for a first public awareness campaign organised by Fairtrade Lëtzebuerg ASBL and the Caritas Luxembourg Foundation, in the presence Romain Schneider, Luxembourg's Minister of Cooperation and Humanitarian Action.

The choice of the date of 24 April is not trivial: it will be the day of commemoration of the disaster of Rana Plaza. It has been five years now since the Rana Plaza, an eight-storey building in Savar on the outskirts of Dhaka in Bangladesh, home to several garment shops, collapsed, killing more than 1,100 people and leaving some 2,500 wounded.

The aim of the event is to raise Luxembourg's awareness of the challenges of the textile sector and to show that alternatives to fast fashion exist and that they allow any consumer to support the right of workers, to participate in protecting the environment and contributing to a more just and equitable world.

Programme:

12:15: Street action
12:20: Speech by Romain Schneider, Minister for Cooperation and Humanitarian Action, followed by a speech by Michael Feit, member of the Executive Board of the Caritas Luxembourg Foundation, and Jean-Louis Zeien, President of Fairtrade Lëtzebuerg ASBL
12:30 - 13:30: Information booth and flyer distributions

The "Rethink your clothes" campaign, launched in March 2018 by the Minister of Cooperation and Humanitarian Action, Romain Schneider, together with Fairtrade Lëtzebeurg ASBL and the Caritas Luxembourg Foundation, aims to raise awareness of Luxembourg's challenges the textile industry and, in particular, to promote the improvement of the living and working conditions of cotton producers and workers in the textile and fashion sector of production and supply. It also seeks to show that another way of consuming is possible: more responsible and more aware of social and ecological issues.
