This afternoon Lydie Polfer, the Mayor of Luxembourg City, opened the 678th continuous edition of the Schueberfouer, the traditional annual fair that takes place in a space of over 4 hectares at the Glacis car-park in late summer.

Mayor Polfer was accompanied by a number of city aldermen, as well as a large net of Schueberfouer balloons in Luxembourg's national colours and the also traditional marching band and a small flock of sheep, the parading of which celebrates the original purpose of the Schueberfouer when first inaugurated by Jean l’Aveugle in 1340 as predominantly a livestock and agricultural fair.

Typically around two million visitors will visit the Schouberfouer during the 20 days that it is open and this year, in addition to the various navettes, normal buses and private transport, will be served by the new Luxtram service from LuxExpo Kirchberg. This promises to be a great benefit to transport around the area. Awaiting the visitors are 23 adult attractions, 20 children’s attractions, 69 games, 15 restaurants, 35 drink and snack stalls and 18 sweet stalls. New attractions for 2018 include “Infinity”, “Tiki Party”, “Aquaboats”, “Tower Jump” and “Tea Party”. The gastronomic establishments can serve up to 5,500 people at the same time.

The Schouberfouer runs until 11 September from 11:00 to 01:00 weekdays and Sundays, and 11:00 to 03:00 on Fridays and Saturdays. Further information can be found online at www.fouer.lu
