This Sunday 25 February 2018 will mark the National Day of Resistance in Luxembourg.

Every year, on 25 February, the Grand Duchy commemorates the men and women who engaged in resistance during the Second World War, especially those who were sent to prisons and camps as a result.

In 1997, the Luxembourgish Resistance organised the first "National Day of Resistance", which would be repeated every year upon the decision of the "National Council of the Resistance”. The date is symbolic in commemorating the 23 Resistance leaders who were shot dead in the Hinzert forest on 25 February 1944, as well as the victims killed during the strike of September 1942.

Official programme:

11:00: Mass at the Glacis Chapel, held by Erzbeschof Jean-Claude Hollerich, during which the Chorale des Exiles will be sung under the direction of Albena Petrovic and Edmond Faber on the organs, accompanied by Josy Thill

11:50: The event moves on to the Monument de la Résistance (Hinzerter Kräiz) at Notre Dame ceremony

12:00: Ceremony in front of the Hinzerter Kräi on Allée des Résistants et Deportés

The celebration consists of choir songs, inspired by military music, the reading of a choice of texts by students from the "Athénée de Luxembourg", as well as prayers from the representatives of the Catholic Church, the Protestant community and the Jewish community in Luxembourg. In addition, the President of the Chamber, President of the Council of State, Ministers Cahen and Kersch on behalf of the government and a representative of the City of Luxembourg will lay flowers, alongside members of the Resistance.

The event will end by passing the graves of the victims, as well as a performance of “Sonnerie aux morts”.
