On Sunday 10 December 2017, Luxembourg city entered a new age in mobility with the opening, not only of the first phase of the LuxTram (from the Red Bridge to Kirchberg), but also of the new Howald railway station, the new Pfaffenthal railway station and the new funicular railway linking the Pfaffenthal railway station with the LuxTram at the Red Bridge.

Despite the snow falling throughout the morning, HRH the Grand Duke and HRH the Grand Duchess, along with Luxembourg's Prime Minister Xavier Bettel and a host of other dignitaries, attended the series of inaugurations, including the Howald railway station followed by the Pfaffenthal-Kirchberg tram stop (at the top of the funicular) and also the first tram to run on the opening day.

Following the official inaugurations, HRH the Grand Duke and HRH the Grand Duchess travelled in the first tram, along with Prime Minister Bettel and the other dignitaries, to the new Tramschapp in Kirchberg where they participated in a short conference aout the new tram.
