25,594 students received scholarships for higher education for the academic year 2014/2015, a recent STATEC study reported, indicating an increase of 389 grants awarded compared with the previous year.
Of those receiving grants from the State, 16,358 were residents and 9,236 were non-residents, comprising a total €91.35 million. This was a marked decrease from the previous year, which stood at €154.36 million. Academic loans were reported at €176.99 million, up from €161.65 million.
3,237 residents and 2,436 non-residents, the majority, opted to study in Belgium; followed by France with 2,143 residents and 4,010 non-residents; and 3,572 and 1,226 for Germany.
Here in the Grand Duchy, 6,287 students were registered at the University of Luxembourg and 664 new students registered for higher education for the academic year 2014-2015.
3,100 men and 3,187 women were recorded at Uni.lu, showing an overall increase of 130 students compared with the previous academic year. In addition, the number of nationalities represented grew by two to 109 in 2014/2015. In this same year, Luxembourgish students constituted the second highest nationality, behind other Member States, at 44.1% and 44.8% respectively. Third party countries were represented in 11.1% of the student population.
In 2014/2015, the Faculty of Law, the Economy and Finance constituted the most popular sector in terms of studies, with 2,782 registered students. This was followed by the Faculty of Art, Social Sciences, the Arts and Educational Studies, at 2,186 students; and the Faculty of Sciences, Technology and Communication at 1,319.
The number of Bachelor Diplomas awarded grew significantly from 546 in 2013 to 628 in 2014, and Doctorats also rose in the same period from 64 to 82. However, the amount of Masters degrees received fell from 369 to 340.
