The outgoing Board of Governors of the University of Luxembourg sat for the last time on Saturday 20 October 2018 in its current composition, with important decisions for the University being made.

Appointments

On the proposal of Rector Stéphane Pallage, and in accordance with the Law of 27 June 2018, the Board of Governors decided to hire Dr. Erica Monfardini as Administrative and Financial Director. Ms. Monfardini has held the position of Executive Director since June 2017 and since then has put in place a plan to improve the functioning of the university administration as well as its budgetary and financial transparency. Previously she held the position of Director of Operations of the Luxembourg Centre for Systems Biomedicine (LCSB) of the University from 2014 to 2017 and has both a scientific and managerial profile.

The Governors also appointed a new dean of the Faculty of Science, Technology and Communication. With the second term of Professor Paul Heuschling as Dean expiring on 19 October 2018, the Rector, after receiving the opinion of faculty professors, proposed the appointment of Professor Jean-Marc Schlenker as Dean of the FSTC, from 20 October 2018, for a five-year term. Mr. Schlenker is a professor of mathematics, specialising in geometry.

Budget

The 2019 draft budget was also on the agenda This balanced budget is in line with the objectives of the 2018-2021 quadrennial plan and presents revenue and expenditure of €275,414,001. The University thus has the framework that will enable it to work to achieve its objectives in 2019.

Academic body

In the context of strengthening the cooperation between the University and the public research centres, two professors, Lucien Hoffmann, Director of the Research and Environmental Innovation Department at the Luxembourg Institute of Technology (LIST), and Laetitia Huiart, Director of the Department of Public Health at the Luxembourg Institute of Health (LIH), have been appointed affiliated professors of the University, from 1 December 2018 and for a period of three years.

This session was the last of the Board of Governors currently in place; it met nine times in 2018. In addition to continuing work on the budget process and financial transparency, the Board of Governors has appointed three affiliated professors, one honorary professor and seven regular professors (three at the Faculty of Science, Technology and Communication, one at the Faculty of Law, Economics and Finance, one at the Faculty of Arts, Humanities, Arts and Sciences of Education and two in the Luxembourg Centre for Systems Biomedicine). Among these appointments is Professor Jens Kreisel who was appointed Vice-Rector of the University of Luxembourg from September 2018.

The new Board of Governors will take office on 1 December 2018, following the appointment of all its members by the Government.
