The Luxembourg unemployment rate has fallen by 12.1% over the past year, bringing the current seasonally adjusted rate calculated by Statec to 5.0%.

The number of active resident jobseekers registered with the ADEM unemployment agency amounted to 15,186 as of 31 December 2018. Over one year, this represents a decrease of 2,097 persons, or 12.1%.

This decrease has mainly benefitted jobseekers under the age of 30 (-18.6%) and low-skilled jobseekers (-13.6%). Similarly, the number of long-term unemployment has decreased by 7.8%, as well as the number of jobseekers with the status of disabled employee or employee with reduced work capacity, which decreased by 7.6% in one year.

Meanwhile, the total number of beneficiaries of employment benefits in Luxembourg was 4,035 at the end of December. Over a year, this represents a drop of 67 people, or 1.6%.  

During the month of December 2018, employers reported 2,464 vacancies to the ADEM, which equated to 342 or 16.1% more posts than in December 2017. Throughout 2018, the number of vacancies declared exceeded 40,000, which represents a 14% increase compared to 2017.
