The number of people actively searching for employment in Luxembourg has dropped by 8.7% over the past year.

The number of active resident jobseekers registered with the ADEM unemployment agency amounted to 15,157 as of 31 January 2019. Over one year, this represents a decrease of 1,442 persons, or 8.7%. This brings the seasonally adjusted unemployment rate calculated by STATEC 5.1%.

This decrease has mainly benefitted jobseekers under the age of 30 (-15.1%) and the long-term unemployed (-6.1%). Similarly, the number of jobseekers with the status of disabled employee or employee with reduced work capacity decreased by 6.2% in one year.

Meanwhile, the total number of beneficiaries of employment benefits in Luxembourg was 4,238 at the end of January. Over a year, this represents a drop of 92 people, or 2.1%. Only special measures (+8.9%) and training offered by the ADEM (+7.5%) were on the rise, whilst  the number of beneficiaries of all other measures decreased.

During the month of January 2019, employers reported 3,502 vacancies to the ADEM, which equated to 486 or 12.2% fewer posts than in January 2018. This decrease comes after a sustained increase in applications during the months of October to December 2018.
