Details:

Each year on Whit Tuesday, thousands of people gather in Echternach for a tradition included on the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage list; the ‘Echternach Sprangpressessioun’ or the Dancing Procession of Echternach. It is a cultural phenomenon in honour of the abbey of Echternach’s founder, where people move forward through dancing and hopping sideways and forward to a polka melody. The procession ends at the tomb of the patron saint located in the crypt of the papal basilica in the heart of the abbey city of Echternach. The purpose of this tradition is one of joy and prayer, a form of communication between God and the body.
