6 December is ‘Nikloosdaach’ in Luxembourg. It is the festival of Saint Nicholas where children receive presents. They usually put out plates the night before and during the night, ‘Kleeschen’ (St. Nicholas) and his sidekick ‘Housecker’ (a man dressed in black who hands out whips to naughty kids) put the presents (or whips…) on the plates. In the morning, the kids get up early, excited to what presents they received. On this day, there is no school for kids who go to primary school.
