On Monday 11 March 2024, the Cinémathèque de la Ville de Luxembourg received an award for the Treasure of European Film Culture Ceremony at Cinémathèque de la Ville de Luxembourg), awarded by the European Film Academy (EFA) in September 2023.

During an official ceremony, the Cinémathèque received a plaque commemorating its status as Treasure of European Film Culture. This distinction was unveiled in the presence of Mr Matthijs Wouter Knol, Director of the European Film Academy, Lydie Polfer, Mayor of the City of Luxembourg, Colette Flesch, Honorary Mayor of the City of Luxembourg, and the actress Vicky Krieps. Their presence highlighted the importance of this recognition for the Cinémathèque and its role in preserving cinematographic heritage.

The ceremony was followed by a screening of the film Corsage by Marie Kreutzer. On this occasion, Vicky Krieps, having unfortunately been absent during the official 2022 ceremony, received her prize from the Best Actress European Film Awards in person.

The Cinémathèque de la Ville de Luxembourg thus became the first Luxembourg establishment to receive this prestigious distinction, joining the ranks of emblematic establishments such as the Institut Lumière in Lyon, the Studio Babelsberg near Berlin, and the Trevi Fountain in Rome, immortalised in Fellini's La dolce vita.

In its press release, the Academy praised the “continued dedication of the Cinémathèque de la Ville de Luxembourg to the preservation and promotion of international cinema heritage” as the reason for its inclusion in the list of Treasures of European Film Culture.

This recognition emphasises the importance of the Cinémathèque as guardian of international cinematic heritage and reinforces its commitment to preserving and promoting the art of cinema for future generations, both within the Luxembourg-Ville and throughout the country, and even beyond, for cinema lovers around the world.
