On Friday 30 June 2023, Luxembourg's Ministry of Mobility and Public Works and the General Directorate for Tourism announced the upcoming launch of the fourth edition of the "Vëlosummer" summer cycling initiative in Luxembourg.

Following the perceived success of previous editions and positive feedback from participating municipalities, Vëlosummer is returning to Luxembourg from 29 July to 27 August 2023.

During this new edition, cycling enthusiasts can safely cover a total of twelve cyclo-tourist routes over more than 500 km in 58 municipalities. This edition foresees four new routes: 114 km of roads will be reserved for cyclists (90% of these routes will be reserved exclusively for one or two weekends). This year, two routes will also allow cyclists to cross the Belgian and French borders.

Luxembourg's Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Mobility, François Bausch, commented: "We are delighted to be able to offer the fourth edition of 'Vëlosummer', which has become an essential event in the Luxembourg calendar. The twelve cycling routes will offer cyclists the opportunity to discover the different facets of the country by bike while encouraging more people to adopt the bicycle as a means of everyday transport."

The participating municipalities and the five regional tourist offices will also contribute to the Vëlosummer 2023 tourism framework programme, by organising various activities along the routes. A series of promotional videos posted on social networks will also highlight the tourist attractions located on these routes.

Further information is also available on the website (and map) https://www.visitluxembourg.com/velosummer, as well as on the "VisitLuxembourg" mobile application.

This year again, signage and markings on the ground will indicate the path to follow. The new panels are deemed sustainable and are partly made from recyclable materials. According to the authorities, the wood from the old panels has found a second life and is being used by return-to-work organisations to make boxes and nesting boxes.

Moreover, the "Move we carry" luggage transport service, allowing cyclists to have their luggage delivered free of charge from one accommodation to another, will be available again this year. The price is €12 per luggage. Other available services include certified "bed+bike" accommodation, which feature a free and enclosed bicycle storage room, and the "Rent a bike" bicycle rental service.

Luxembourg's Minister for Tourism, Lex Delles, emphasised in this context that "the General Directorate for Tourism has placed the tourist year 2023 under the sign of active tourism. In this context, 'Vëlosummer' plays a central role and offers the possibility of discovering our tourist attractions by bicycle. By highlighting the tourist assets and the specificities of our different regions, we encourage residents, cross-border workers and tourists to grasp the diversity of Luxembourg."
