International Women's Day (IWD) may be over for another year but the fight for women's rights is continuing in Luxembourg with "Take Back the Night", a march aimed at combating violence against women, scheduled for Thursday 21 March 2024 (from 18:00).

Organised by LUX WMN Magazine, in partnership with ING Luxembourg, Take Back the Night seeks to raise awareness about violence against women and to ignite meaningful change within the community.

Supported by various sponsors and partners (POST Luxembourg, Ville de Luxembourg, Vodafone, Luxembourg's Ministry for Gender Equality and Diversity, Femmes en Détresse, AMCHAM and KPMG), Take Back the Night promises to be an evening of solidarity, empowerment and advocacy; a demonstration of collective resolve in addressing the pervasive issue of gender-based violence.

The event takes the form of a symbolic march through Luxembourg City, starting at ING (Luxembourg-Gare) and culminating at the Glacis car park (Limpertsberg), where participants will gather for speeches from community leaders, including Luxembourg's Minister for Gender Equality and Diversity, Yuriko Backes. In addition to music by DJ Miss Sappho, the event features information stands from various organisations, as well as food trucks on-site.

"At its core, 'Take Back the Night' is a rallying cry for change," explained Amanda Roberts, founder of LUX WMN. "It's a call to action for all members of society to stand in solidarity with survivors of gender-based violence and to work towards a future where safety and respect are the birthright of every woman".

Speaking about this inaugural edition with Chronicle.lu, she shared that "the idea is to make it an annual event, but of course it depends very much on how the first one goes. Raising awareness about violence against women in Luxembourg and beyond unfortunately continues to be an ever-present issue. We hope to see a great turn out next Thursday!"

50% of ticket sales from the event will be donated to Femmes en Détresse, a local organisation dedicated to supporting women affected by violence. Participants can register for free or purchase tickets. Paid tickets support the organisation of the evening and include an event T-shirt and a donation to Femmes en Détresse.

Asked about the choice of charity, Amanda said: "Femmes en Détresse is the go-to resource for women who need assistance in cases of violence or abuse so they seemed like an obvious choice of the organisation we could support with our event."

As for the choice of date for the event, which is taking place just a couple of weeks after International Women's Day, she confirmed that 21 March has no "real significance": "To be honest, although we believe IWD and Women's History month are important, we work every day to make the world a more equitable place."

She encouraged as many people as possible to sign up, noting: "We are only half to where we'd like to be in terms of registrations. I'm hoping it will pick up before the event." Registration is necessary for both the free and paid options. Paying registrants will be able to pick up their T-shirts and tote bags ahead of the event, on Tuesday 19 and Wednesday 20 March 2024, at ING in Luxembourg-Gare
