On Friday evening, the Ambassador of Ireland to Luxembourg, Peadar Carpenter, hosted the embassy’s annual St Patrick’s Day reception at the Cercle Cité in Luxembourg city centre.

Speaking in both Gaelic and English to the 250+ strong attendance, Amb Carpenter stressed that St Patrick’s Day is an international celebration celebrated throughout the world. He talked about education and innovation as crucial to the knowledge economy in Ireland; as well as having its own talent pool, Ireland also attracts immigrants to Ireland - the new Irish.

He addressed various economic and political issues, mentioning Ireland’s corporate tax rate of 12.5% and he touched on Brexit and the 20th anniversary of the Good Friday Agreements.

He also talked about the Irish community in Luxembourg, including the newly-formed TCD Alumni Association, as well as mentioning the various activities organised by the Irish community over the St Patrick’s week-end. He concluded by referring to the culmination of the RBS 6 Nations on Saturday in which Ireland play England at Twickenham for the Grand Slam, having already won the championship with four wins out of four.

After the formal speech, the reception continued, involving people from the Irish business and social communities, as well as representatives from Luxembourg’s political and business sectors.

Ireland’s national day, St Patrick’s Day, is celebrated annually on 17 March. As part of its Global Greening campaign, the Hotel de Ville was illuminated in green lights yesterday evening.
