On Wednesday 4 October 2023, Luxembourg's Prime Minister Xavier Bettel delivered the opening speech at this year's International Luxembourg Model United Nations (iLUMUN) Conference, held at the International School of Luxembourg (ISL).

As explained by ISL, the iLUMUN Conference is a dynamic and educational event initiated by students from the International School of Luxembourg and the Athenée de Luxembourg. It is designed to emulate the workings of the United Nations (UN), offering insights into international affairs, politics and diplomacy for participants.

In his speech, Prime Minister Bettel emphasised the importance of unity, human rights and international cooperation, with a focus on the role of the UN. He also emphasised Luxembourg's commitment to multilateralism and working together with other nations, citing their membership in international organisations such as the UN, the European Union (EU) and NATO.

The four-day conference is set to run until Saturday 7 October 2023 and has drawn the participation of approximately 100 delegates hailing from diverse schools and nations.

ISL noted that iLUMUN encourages students to engage in robust debates and discussions on pressing global issues. Delegates are assigned specific countries and committees, where they represent the views and interests of their assigned nation. Through thorough research and preparation, participants delve into a variety of pressing international concerns, such as conflict resolution, human rights, sustainable development, disarmament and global health, among others. They then engage in lively debates and negotiations, attempting to formulate resolutions that represent the interests of their nation and address the complex issue at hand. They must exercise effective communication, negotiation and critical thinking skills to build alliances, find common ground and reach consensus.

Apart from honing their diplomatic skills, MUN conferences also help participants develop their public speaking and persuasive abilities and foster understanding and tolerance among participants by promoting open-mindedness and respect for diverse perspectives, added ISL.
