The Grand Ducal Police have launched a new national road safety campaign focusing on the importance of seat belts.

As part of a general road safety approach, the police will focus on seat belts during their March campaign. In order to raise awareness among drivers about wearing it, the police will carry out dedicated checks during the week of 11 to 17 March 2024.

Over a period of ten years, 33% of drivers or passengers who lost their lives in an accident and 10% of those seriously injured were not wearing a seat belt, as shown by a study recently published by STATEC.

Not wearing a seat belt constitutes a major risk during an accident, hence the obligation to wear a seat belt even for short journeys, stressed the police.

For illustration, an impact at 50 km/h is equivalent to a fall from the third floor. In this context, the police also recalled the importance of ensuring that children are properly restrained: in the event of an accident at 30 km/h, an unrestrained child (no seat belt) risks being propelled like a projectile towards the front of the vehicle, warned the police.

In parallel with the aforementioned checks and as already announced in February, the police will continue to have an increased presence on Luxembourg's roads and at the main events and festivals during the carnival period. Reinforced controls particularly aimed at driving under the influence of alcohol are planned.
