On Friday 13 June 2025, Luxembourg’s Ministry of Finance reported that Luxembourg Minister of Finance, Gilles Roth, undertook a working visit to Japan from Tuesday 10 to Thursday 12 June 2025. 

According to the ministry, the visit focused on strengthening financial cooperation and exploring new opportunities in various fields such as fintech, sustainable finance and cross-border investment.

In Osaka, Minister Roth met with representatives of the Osaka Prefectural Government, including Director General of the Policy and Planning Department, Kenji Katsui. During this meeting, discussions took place on growth strategies, support for fintech and startup companies, as well as opportunities for collaboration between the financial centres of Luxembourg and Osaka.

In Tokyo, Minister Roth met with Tokyo Governor, Yuriko Koike. They discussed opportunities for cooperation between the financial centres of Luxembourg and Japan, with a focus on asset management, fintech and startups.

The ministry also reported that Minister Roth held a bilateral meeting with Japan's Minister of Finance, Katsunobu Katō, to discuss the macroeconomic situation, the digitalisation of the financial sector and opportunities to further strengthen ties between the two countries' financial sectors. Minister Roth also held a series of meetings with various stakeholders in the Japanese financial sector.

Minister Roth said: “Luxembourg and Japan share a deep and long-standing friendship. In an uncertain geopolitical context, we must seize opportunities for collaboration to strengthen these ties, particularly in the financial sector. This will foster mutually beneficial cooperation and support sustainable economic growth, in the interest of citizens.”
