On Friday 7 November 2025, Luxembourg was elected to the UNESCO Executive Board during the organisation’s 43rd General Conference in Samarkand, Uzbekistan.

According to the Luxembourg Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs, Defence, Cooperation and Foreign Trade, in Group I of the ballot Luxembourg received 165 votes and was elected alongside Norway (164 votes) and Turkey (162 votes).

Luxembourg will therefore sit on the Executive Board for the period 2025–2029. This marks the second time that Luxembourg holds a seat on the Executive Board, having previously served from 2005 to 2009.

Following the announcement of the election, Luxembourg Deputy Prime Minister Bettel said: “This vote is the result of the work carried out by Luxembourg’s teams at UNESCO. I would like to thank the 165 countries that placed their trust in Luxembourg during this election. Even though Luxembourg is not the largest country, we can play an important role in finding solutions for the benefit of all.”

According to the ministry, Luxembourg's priorities for its mandate on the UNESCO Executive Board are:

  2. Culture, multilingualism and interculturality
  3. Information and communication
  4. Science
