Luxembourg's Directorate of Defence has reported that Defence Minister Yuriko Backes attended the Berlin Security Conference in Germany on Tuesday 18 November 2025.

During the conference, Luxembourg's Minister of Defence participated in several bilateral meetings. She had a working dinner with German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius to discuss Russia's war of aggression against Ukraine, strengthening NATO's European pillar through increased investment in military capabilities, and the importance of the space sector for defence.

During a meeting with Swedish Defence Minister Pål Jonson, Minister Backes discussed military support for Ukraine, the importance of coordination among the capability coalitions of the Ukraine Defence Contact Group, current NATO issues, and the Women, Peace and Security agenda.

She also met with Kosovo's Minister of Defence, Ejup Maqedonci, to discuss regional security and the Luxembourg Army's contribution to NATO's Kosovo Force (KFOR) mission.

Discussions with Marie-Agnes Strack-Zimmermann, Member of the European Parliament (MEP) and Chair of the Committee on Security and Defence, focused on key EU initiatives, the importance of an ambitious EU budget for defence and space, EU-NATO coordination, and European defence preparedness.

Moreover, Minister Backes met with Irene Fellin, NATO Secretary General's Special Representative for Women, Peace and Security, to discuss the importance of women's full, equal and meaningful participation in security and defence to achieve lasting peace.

The Berlin Security Conference is one of Europe's largest security and defence policy events.
