On Wednesday 25 March 2026, Luxembourg’s Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs, Defence, Development Cooperation and Foreign Trade reported on the visit of Grand Duke Guillaume of Luxembourg and Deputy Prime Minister Xavier Bettel to Brussels on Tuesday 24 and Wednesday 25 March.
On Tuesday 24 March Grand Duke Guillaume and Minister Bettel were received in Brussels by the President of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola, and the President of the European Council, António Costa. Discussions focused on the main issues of European and international current affairs, in a context marked by major geopolitical, economic and security challenges.
During the day, Grand Duke Guillaume and Minister Bettel also visited Luxembourg’s permanent representation to the European Union, where they met diplomatic staff and Luxembourgers working within the European institutions.
In his address, Grand Duke Guillaume highlighted the fundamental role of the European Union as a community of values and solidarity, noting that “Europe constitutes an essential framework for Luxembourg’s prosperity and stability.” He also praised the daily commitment of Luxembourg staff at the heart of the European decision-making process, emphasising their contribution to the European project and to the service of the country.
Grand Duke Guillaume further stressed the necessity of preserving the founding principles of the European Union in the face of current tensions, noting that these principles constitute “a true compass for navigating an uncertain international environment.”
On Wednesday 25 March, the visit continued at the headquarters of the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO), where Grand Duke Guillaume and Minister Bettel were received by the Secretary General, Mark Rutte. Discussions focused on current issues of international security, particularly in the context of changes in the global strategic environment and the challenges affecting Euro-Atlantic security.
During this visit, Grand Duke Guillaume and Minister Bettel also met Luxembourgers serving within NATO, acknowledging their contribution to strengthening collective security.
