On Tuesday 31 March 2026, Luxembourg’s Minister of the Economy, SMEs, Energy and Tourism, Lex Delles, during his visit to Lisbon, took part in the meeting together with his Portuguese counterpart, the Minister of Environment and Energy, Maria da Graça Carvalho.
According to Luxembourg’s Ministry of the Economy, at the invitation of the Cypriot Presidency of the Council of the European Union (EU), European energy ministers met in an informal videoconference to discuss the energy consequences of the situation in the Middle East and to consider a coordinated European response.
The meeting focused in particular on strengthening economic exchanges between Luxembourg and Portugal, especially in the field of renewable energy, reported the ministry.
The ministry noted that for Luxembourg, which is highly dependent on energy imports, European coordination is an essential factor both for security of supply and for market stability. Luxembourg stressed the need to avoid any fragmentation of the internal market and to ensure security of supply across the EU by maintaining cross-border energy flows under all circumstances.
The Luxembourg government said it remains attentive to developments in the international situation and stands ready to adapt its measures if necessary, while prioritising temporary, targeted and coordinated actions at European level.
In his remarks, Minister Lex Delles stated: “The war in the Middle East reminds us of our vulnerability to expensive fossil fuel imports and highlights the importance of continuing to gradually reduce the role of oil and natural gas in our economies. In terms of structural measures, we know the main levers: more energy produced in Europe, increased electrification and greater energy savings.”
