On Friday 15 May 2026, Luxembourg’s Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs, Defence, Cooperation and Foreign Trade reported on the participation of Luxembourg’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, Xavier Bettel, in the 135th session of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe.
The session, which took place in Chișinău, Moldova, on Thursday 14 and Friday 15 May, saw Minister Bettel underline the importance of multilateral forums such as the Council of Europe in preserving dialogue and international cooperation in a geopolitical context increasingly marked by challenges to multilateralism.
According to the ministry, Minister Bettel welcomed the progress achieved towards the establishment of a special tribunal for the crime of aggression against Ukraine. He recalled that combating impunity is an essential element in achieving a just and lasting peace.
He also reaffirmed Luxembourg’s firm support for the European Court of Human Rights, which plays an essential role in protecting the most vulnerable people and defending the fundamental rights and freedoms that form the foundation of European values. He stressed that, in a context of increasing pressure, the Court must be able to continue exercising its mandate independently, impartially and effectively.
Moreover, on the sidelines of the ministerial session, Minister Bettel held bilateral talks with Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for European Integration of Moldova, Cristina Gherasimov, as well as with Minister for Foreign Affairs of Georgia, Maka Botchorishvili and the President of the European Court of Human Rights, Mattias Guyomar.
