On Wednesday 21 October 2026, over 100 people from the American Chamber of Commerce in Luxembourg’s Members’ Benefit Club (MBC) met at Pizza Hut in Place d’Armes for its annual social event.
With pastries, as well as garlic bread and pizza slices, served with coffee, juice and water, it was a great networking opportunity for many.
In the more formal part of the event, AMCHAM Chairman, Paul Schonenberg, welcomed everyone and recollected his student days and nostalgia when he spent much time at Pizza Hut. He talked about the origins of the MBC which started during the COVID-19 pandemic when many companies in the hospitality and retail sectors were struggling: AMCHAM presented that it could introduce its members in return for discounts.
He confirmed that 280 retail establishments representing 350 locations currently offer discounts to the 8,000 MBC members.
He talked about a new mobile app which is currently being developed which will replace the current MBC membership cards, and is hoped to be ready for launch in the new year. One feature will give access to a directory of stores, with a separate feature offering a library of digital content which will expand the programme.
Guest speaker, Laurent Mosar, Alderman at the City of Luxembourg and Member of Parliament, said he was impressed to see so many people out early in the morning. He was also impressed with the venue which he also remembered from his student days.
He talked about competitiveness and said we should be aware what is happening in our neighbouring countries, and confided that he was really worried about what is currently going on in France, referencing the current social unrest. He talked up Luxembourg’s political stability which he explained is linked closely to social peace.
He said the price to be paid for social peace is high, but is a price worth paying. He hoped the problems in France would not spread to Luxembourg and referred to the recent tripartite dialogue as a positive step.
On competitiveness, he said that corporate tax has risen around 5%, but we may depend too much on the financial sector as 77% of corporate tax comes from the financial sector. He said this represents a risk for Luxembourg and this government (and recent ones too) had addressed diversification.
He said that Luxembourg’s threats to competitiveness include talent attraction, and for this he talked up the role of the international community in Luxembourg, but also talked about the threat posed by far right politics, calling out the ADR political party. He said that Luxembourg does not need to raise taxes to be able to attract top talent. Secondly, he mentioned administrative simplification / over regulation, and called for less regulation at EU level. “We are the world champion in regulation; we want to be world champion in innovation” he stated to applause.
Thirdly, he mentioned energy prices being too high; and, fourthly, he talked about security in Luxembourg city and other areas. He said we must make many efforts and referred to Minister Leon Gloden doing a good job, with new laws before parliament as well as 500 more police officers recruited; however, he admitted more measures are needed.
He concluded by stating that Luxembourg is indeed competitive but we must not get complacent and need to keep working at it.
Paul Schonenberg wrapped up the formal part of the event by thanking AMCHAM’s Sonja Holper and other colleagues.
