On Wednesday 21 May 2025, Luxembourgs Customs and Excise Agency (ADA) reported that it recently carried out a "successful" motorway inspection.

At the end of April 2025, customs officials "struck a significant blow" against illegal cigarette smuggling. During a routine check on the A6 motorway, near Aire de Capellen, heading toward Luxembourg, dog handlers and customs officers inspected a German vehicle carrying two young Syrian citizens. While inspecting the vehicle, the officers noticed nine large cardboard boxes, neatly stacked in the cargo area.

Although the vehicle occupants stated that they were not carrying any prohibited goods, the officers conducted a thorough inspection. Upon opening the boxes, the officers found 450 cartons of untaxed counterfeit "Marlboro Gold" cigarettes - totalling 90,023 cigarettes without tax stamps.

Customs seized all the goods. As this is a suspected violation of Luxembourg tax and customs law, the case has been referred to the relevant department of the excise office for further processing. The internal investigation is currently ongoing.
