
On Tuesday 10 June 2025, President of the Italian Republic Sergio Mattarella, was welcomed at the Grand Ducal Palace by Grand Duke Henri and Grand Duchess Maria Teresa as he began the first day of a two-day official visit to the Grand Duchy.
The Italian President and his delegation, visiting Luxembourg at the invitation of Grand Duke Henri and Grand Duchess Maria Teresa, were welcomed by the Grand Ducal couple on the forecourt of the Grand Ducal Palace for a ceremony which included military honours, the playing of the national anthems, a review of the troops and a presentation by the Luxembourg and Italian authorities. Following the welcoming ceremony, Sergio Mattarella and his daughter, Laura Mattarella, returned to the Grand Ducal Palace with the Grand Ducal couple for a meeting.
In the evening, Grand Duke Henri and Grand Duchess Maria Teresa hosted a gala dinner in honour of the President of the Italian Republic, which concluded the first day of his visit. Guests included Prince Guillaume, Hereditary Grand Duke of Luxembourg, Luxembourg’s Prime Minister Luc Frieden, Ambassador of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg to Rome, Christophe Schiltz, and President of Ferrero, Giovanni Ferrero.
On Wednesday 11 June 2025, Sergio Mattarella will meet with the President of the Chamber of Deputies, Claude Wiseler, at the Chamber of Deputies. The Italian President will then be received by Prime Minister Luc Frieden for an exchange of views at the Hôtel Saint-Maximin (Ministry of State) in Luxembourg-Ville. The discussions will focus primarily on major current European issues.
As part of his visit, the President of the Italian Republic will also take the opportunity to meet the Italian community residing in the Grand Duchy, in the presence of Grand Duke Henri.
A former constitutional judge, Sergio Mattarella was elected President of Italy in January 2015 before being re-elected in January 2022. He is the country's longest-serving president to date.
