On Friday 31 July 2026, the City of Luxembourg (VdL) called on walkers to be vigilant in the capital’s parks and forests due to natural risks linked to the current weather conditions.
The VdL noted that following the high temperatures that have persisted for several weeks, combined with drought conditions, trees are being weakened. It emphasised that even trees that appear healthy may present risks and falling branches or trunks cannot be ruled out.
The VdL therefore recommends that visitors to municipal parks and forests exercise increased caution during their walks in wooded areas, favour open spaces, remain on marked paths and trails and avoid staying for too long beneath old trees. If walkers notice a fallen tree or large branches, they are advised to move away from the affected area immediately, as further falls may occur.
The VdL detailed that this phenomenon, known as natural pruning, is a defence mechanism used by certain trees in response to water stress. During periods of drought, trees may spontaneously shed some of their branches in order to reduce water consumption and limit the risk of drying out.
In this context, the VdL is also calling on everyone to exercise the utmost vigilance in forests and parks, as well as in their surrounding areas, due to the high risk of fire.
The VdL reiterated that it is strictly prohibited to light fires of any kind (barbecues, campfires, etc.) or to throw away cigarette butts or any other object that could cause a fire to start and reminded everyone of the importance of adopting responsible behaviour in order to preserve natural areas and ensure everyone’s safety.
