The Fondation Lëtzebuerger Blannevereenegung (FLB), in partnership with the Mierscher Theater, has announced it will host the first play to feature a Luxembourgish-language audio description for visually impaired and blind people.

The FLB has reported that the audio description will be delivered during the performance of the play Vreckvéiat the Mierscher Theater (53 Rue Grande-Duchesse Charlotte, Mersch), on Friday 23 May 2025 at 18:30. The FLB described the initiative as “a new milestone in the Lëtzebuerger Blannevereenegung's commitment to inclusion and accessibility for all”.

Visually impaired or blind spectators will be able to enjoy the audio description through special headsets provided on site. They will also participate in a tactile tour of the stage and sets before the show takes place. Non-visually impaired attendees will be given the option to immerse themselves in darkness by wearing a blackout mask (provided by the FLB) and to experience the performance with the audio description.

Audio description is a technique which allows visually impaired or blind people to follow a play through real-time audio descriptions of actions, facial expressions and sets.

Managing Director of the FLB, Thierry Lutgen, said: “We are delighted to be able to launch this new service, which provides this unique experience for visually impaired and blind people.” He added: "The Mierscher Theater has always been committed to an inclusive and accessible culture. The Blannevereenegung's initiative to provide audio description in Luxembourgish is unique in the country."

Director of the Mierscher Theater, Claude Mangen, added: “It is a powerful tool and in line with our inclusion strategy, we support this project with great enthusiasm!"

With this project, the FLB has stated it is “continuing its mission to implement beneficial services for the visually impaired community, a group representing the most widespread disability within the Luxembourg population”.

The FLB is also launching a call for applications to recruit motivated future audio describers who are eager to contribute to this initiative. Interested individuals will have the opportunity to develop unique skills and play an active role in the inclusion of visually impaired people in Luxembourg.
